New Mum Ksenija Lukich on good sleep hygiene and Yoga Nidra

Just before Ksenija Lukich gave birth to her daughter Mimi, she spoke to Body and Soul about pregnancy and pre-motherhood – plus all the tricks and tips she uses for winding down for the night.

Former E! presenter and new Mum Ksenija Lukich is a self-confessed beauty tragic. We spoke to the journalist and producer about how she navigated pregnancy and winding down pre-motherhood. Lukich gave birth to her daughter Mimi earlier this week.

What’s the first thing you do to wind down before bed?

I’ve always had trouble sleeping so practicing good sleep hygiene is really important to me. I like to start off after dinner by lowering all the lights in the apartment. This is a great first signal to my body to slow down.

And the last thing you do before you go to sleep?

Read my Kindle (but sometimes I end up scrolling on my phone). I notice a massive difference in the quality of my sleep when I read, but sometimes I get hooked on the phone! Can’t be perfect 100% of the time.

Talk us through your night time beauty routine…

I wash off my makeup with CeraVe Foaming Cleanser $14.99 at Chemist Warehouse, then I use Krave Beauty Great Barrier Relief, $64.95 at Lila Beauty followed by Tatcha Beauty Dewey Skin Cream, $103 at Mecca and top it with Biossance Squalane Oil, $12 at Sephora. Twice a week I use St Tropez Self Tan Purity Vitamins Bronzing Water Face Serum, $34.99 at Priceline in place of the Great Barrier Relief and this gives me a really nice natural sunkissed glow without clogging my pores.

During my pregnancy keeping the skin on my body hydrated has been super important so I have been religiously applying Aveeno Dermexa Daily Emollient Cream, $22 at Woolworths.

Do you take any supplements or sleep-aids?

When I wasn’t pregnant I took Melatonin tablets on occasion to help me sleep. They’re a great natural supplement and non-drowsy. Whilst I’ve been pregnant I have taken magnesium supplements and when I really can’t sleep I love Yoga Nidra on Insight Timer. My favourite one is by Jennifer Pierce. It’s a wonderful relaxation tool and works every time!

What do you sleep on?

I love crisp linen sheets. I’ve tried silk pillow cases but actually find them hot and uncomfortable. I wish I loved them as I’m sure my skin and hair would thank me for it, but I just love my linen!

What’s your stance on technology before bed?

We have a no TV in bed policy and I try to not look at my phone once I’m in bed.

Do you have a preferred or go-to late night snack?

A piece of fruit or some walnuts and dates.

What time do you usually hop into bed?

Usually around 9 to 9:30pm. I’ll usually read for half an hour then nod off to sleep.

What do you do if you can’t drift off or have trouble sleeping – do you have a go-to fix?

I often wake up in the middle of the night and if I can’t get back to sleep within 20 minutes I will get up and go to the other room. I’ll usually read and listen to a podcast. I find changing locations helpful and it stops me from tossing and turning.
